Jake Long é aparentemente um simples garoto sino-americano de treze anos morando em Nova Iorque, mas ele tem um segredo: é descendente de uma longa linhagem de dragões e tem a função de proteger uma comunidade de criaturas mágicas que vivem secretamente no meio da população da cidade. Ele mora com seus pais, Johnathan e Susan, e sua irmã de oito anos, Haley. Seu avô Lau Chi e a irmã também são dragões. A linhagem pula sempre uma geração, sendo assim, a mãe de Jake não tem o mesmo poder. Seu pai nem sabe que seus filhos e o sogro são dragões.

Durante a série, Jake é orientado pelo avô a usar seus poderes mágicos inatos e por um Shar Pei de 600 anos chamado Kung cão. Jake precisa desses poderes para proteger as criaturas mágicas de diversos inimigos, entre eles o Clã do Caçador liderado pelo Caçador. As histórias mostram Jake tentando conciliar sua vida como guardião mágico com a de um adolescente. Ele tem dois grandes amigos (Trixie e Spud), interesses amorosos (Rosa) e atividades escolares.
